Plot
Sam Kane (Macfadyen) is a former mobster who has changed his identity and moved to a coastal town in Oregon, where he runs a bookstore called Second Skin. He lives a quiet and lonely life, avoiding any contact with his customers and his former associates. One day, he witnesses a car accident involving a blonde woman (Henstridge) and a black SUV. He rushes to help her and takes her to the hospital, where he learns that she has no memory of who she is or where she came from. He decides to take her home and let her stay with him until she recovers her memory.

The woman, who calls herself Crystal Ball, soon develops an attraction to Sam and they begin a passionate affair. However, Sam's past catches up with him when he receives a phone call from Tommy Gunn (Waite), a ruthless hitman who works for Merv Gutman (Peter Fonda), the mob boss that Sam betrayed and fled from. Tommy tells Sam that he knows where he is and that he wants the money that Sam stole from Merv. He also reveals that Crystal is actually Merv's girlfriend and that he was the one who drove the SUV that hit her. He says that he will kill them both if Sam doesn't pay up.
Sam realizes that Crystal was part of a scheme to lure him out of hiding and that she was supposed to kill him after getting close to him. He confronts her and she admits that she was working for Merv, but claims that she has fallen in love with him and wants to start a new life with him. She says that she doesn't remember anything about her past or the accident, and that she only knows what Tommy told her over the phone. She begs Sam to trust her and to run away with her.
Sam is conflicted between his feelings for Crystal and his suspicion of her motives. He decides to give her a chance and agrees to leave with her. However, before they can escape, Tommy arrives at the bookstore with his henchmen and attacks them. A violent shootout ensues, in which Sam manages to kill Tommy and his men, but is fatally wounded in the process. He dies in Crystal's arms, telling her that he loves her. Crystal cries over his body, then picks up a gun and shoots herself in the head.
